Shirley Wegner, Time Modulator, 2024, One Channel video, 7 min Time Modulator takes place in three historic sites in the original colony of Mazkeret Batya, Israel, dated from late 19th century. Filmed in 2024, it follows two of the old wells and the blacksmith shop. The repetitive image of the cogwheel is embedded in early aesthetics of settlements in Israel, and is inherent in Machine aesthetics of early Modernism at large. Interchangeable moving wheels accelerate throughout as old mechanic apparatuses, instigating movement whose outcome is unknown. In this work the subdivisions of the university space into the main gallery, the subterranean operational floor, and the green gardens surrounding the building are intertwined, leading us from one space to another, collapsing the original space.
